Dominican Cooking Class

Learn to make mouth-watering Caribbean delicacies like coconut fish and drunken stew on this unmissable cooking class in Punta Cana – you’ll feel like a true Dominican chef!

Dominican Cooking Class in Punta Cana

On the day of your cooking class, we’ll pick you up from your hotel in Punta Cana and head to a special kitchen located in the east of the Dominican Republic. While we get ready to cook, you’ll be served two drinks to kick off the evening in style. Choose from mamajuana, beer, rum, white wine, mojito or cuba libre! There will also be bottles of mineral water available.

Kitted out in our aprons, we’ll begin the cooking class following the instructions of our expert multilingual guide to prepare our chosen recipe. At the end of the practical class, we’ll be able to taste the fruits of our labour and judge our cooking skills for ourselves, trying the dishes we’ve prepared. Afterwards, you’ll be taken back to your hotel in Punta Cana.

What will we make?

Depending on the day you choose to enjoy the cooking class, you’ll prepare a different recipe: you’ll make coconut fish on Tuesdays and “sancocho borraco” or drunken stew, on Wednesdays. Both are staples of Dominican cuisine!

Tuesday: Coconut fish

Coconut fish is one of the most popular recipes in the Dominican Republic and it’s incredibly simple: all you need is a good fresh whole fish (preferably snapper or grouper), salt, crushed garlic, a few teaspoons of coconut milk and, above all, a lot of love! The final result is a tasty dish that will delight your tastebuds.

Wednesday: “Sancocho borracho”

Sancocho is another of the most typical dishes of the Caribbean. This hearty stew is prepared with different meats and local root vegetables, and we’re going to make it “borracho”, or “drunken style”! We’ll cook the ingredients up with a few cups of rum or another alcohol drink that we like – delicious!

Pick up times & places

Excursion to Santo Domingo

Pass through the Santo Domingo colonial area in this tour where you’ll discover the legacy of the Columbus family and the main monuments of the oldest city in America.

Itinerary

First thing in the morning we’ll pass by your hotel to pick you up and leave towards the Dominican capital, arriving following a two-hour bus journey.

On our guided tour of the Santo Domingo colonial area, we’ll pass through the historic centre from the 16th century, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The visit begins with the Cathedral of Santa María la Menor, the first cathedral built in the new world. Here we can see a stunning example of the “plateresque” architectural style, prevalent throughout Spain from the late 15th century onwards, and used for the first time outside Spain in this cathedral.

Next, we’ll see the National Pantheon, a monument from the 18th century which houses the remains of many of the Dominican Republic’s most famous and honoured citizens. Next, the tour visits Plaza de España, where the Alcázar de Colón can be found, the old residence of Christopher Columbus himself. And the Museum of Royal Houses, where we’ll learn about the palaces in which the old governors stayed, but we won’t visit on this tour. After having visited the museum we’ll pause to enjoy a typical Dominican lunch in the centre of the city.

The excursion continues over the afternoon with a panoramic tour of the Santo Domingo new town, where we’ll see some of the most important buildings in the Dominican capital, such as the Palace of Fine Arts, the National Theatre, or the Presidential Palace. The route ends on the banks of the Ozama River, with a visit to the Columbus Lighthouse, a monument dedicated to the famous explorer, where his remains are said to rest.

With the tour of Santo Domingo over, we begin our return journey to the hotels of Punta Cana, where we’ll arrive late in the afternoon.
